§ 2-3. Same—Enumerated.

  • In accordance with the minimum employment standards for law enforcement officers adopted by section 2-2, the following are established as the minimum standards for employment:

    (a)

    Each applicant shall be a citizen of the United States.

    (b)

    Each applicant shall be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.

    (c)

    Each applicant shall have graduated from high school or shall have attained the equivalent of a high school diploma by having passed the general education development test indicating high school graduation level.

    (d)

    No applicant shall have been convicted of a felony.

    (e)

    Each applicant shall be fingerprinted with a search of local, state and national fingerprint files to be made for the purpose of disclosing any criminal record.

    (f)

    Each applicant shall be of good moral character as determined by a favorable report following a comprehensive background investigation covering school and employment records, home environment, personal traits and integrity. Consideration will be given to any and all law violations, including traffic and conservation law convictions as indicating a lack of good character.

    (g)

    A declaration of the applicant's medical history shall become a part of the background investigation and such information shall be available to the examining physician.

    (h)

    Each applicant shall be of acceptable physical, emotional and mental fitness as established by a licensed physician following an examination to determine if the applicant is free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect the performance of his duties as a police officer.

    (i)

    Each applicant shall possess normal hearing and normal color vision. He shall be free from any impediments of the senses. He must possess normal visual functions and visual acuity in each eye correctable to 20/20. The trainee must be physically sound; well-developed physically, with height and weight in relation to each other and to age as indicated by accepted medical standards and shall be in possession of his extremities. He shall be free from any physical defects, chronic diseases, organic diseases, organic or functional conditions, or mental instabilities which may tend to impair the efficient performance of his duties so as to endanger the lives of others or himself.

    (j)

    Each applicant shall engage in an oral interview by the hiring authority or his representative, to determine the applicant's acceptability for a position as a police officer and to assess his appearance, background and ability to communicate.
